does avast, avg and spybot search and destroy run in your background? or can i just turn them on when i want to?
do u want realtime protection or just on demand scanning?if real time protection get AntiVir Personal, which is free, if on demand, get the same program, but in the install, disable the realtime protection. for spyware get Superantispyware, which is just an on demand scanner.

free antivirus - a lot of them but best - none, in a sense that it will only prompt you to buy the full version after you run it by saying, 'this threat can only be removed if you upgrade to our XYZ version..
You can get one off scans with Windows live one care!

Check out Daytona_178's guide. It works wonders, and has links to everything.
I have used AVAST and had a bad experience with it. :( One fine day, I switch on the computer and the computer freezes while loading into the desktop, no matter how many attempts, it is i the same thing. I had to bring it to the computer repair shop and had it fixed. They diagnose and say that it was AVAST that is causing the problem. So people using avast, please be careful. (had to reformat my comp)
