We (me and my dad) have a budget of around 1700$.
Some things we are hoping to fit into that budget:
Quad core processor, 4gb RAM, 24-30'' monitor, 500gb HD (2x250gb HDs), a great video card (looking at the gtx 280), a decent motherboard (SLI support is not really necessary), a cheap and decent sound card. We're thinking of running Home premium 64-bit and XP as a secondary OS.
A blu-ray/HD-DVD reader would be nice, but not really necessary. I don't usually overclock btw.
I really can't scrimp with the video card since I'll be running some gpu-intensive programs (and games...).
Any suggestions as to which parts are best? Building A PC (need some help)

If you have a properly optimized PC and don't have a bunch of background programs running while you're playing games, I think an E8500 would be better for gaming, especially if you overclock it to 4+ Ghz. I would get a 1GB 4870 for a GPU if you can find a good price after rebate, I wouldn't want to have to deal with Crossfire. You could probably get a cheaper motherboard if you're trying to save money and don't need a lot of features. I would get a smaller monitor, either a good 19-inch or 22-inch (be wary that a lot of 22-inch monitors have poor color reproduction and viewing angles). Get a larger harddrive, you should be looking at at least 500GB.

Thanks man, you really helped me with my list of hardware, seriously, haha.
How much power would all that approx. need? Would 650W be suffice?
Try this
Would the case be more than big enough for any possible future upgrades (such as perhaps a longer video card)?
I'm just a bit apprehensive about going for a mid tower
It says it support the big Nvidia 8800GTX.

I recommend getting an SLI board and a GTX 280. Later on you can upgrade to another GTX 280 when the price goes down.
You dont want an nFarce board. SLI is not worth the headaches.
