Need New Laptop! Help!

O wise and knowledgeable gurus of the Hardware forum! I am going to ask for a laptop for Christmas, and was wondering if you could help me. This will be the first computer that I actually own, so it will need to do a few things. I would like to be able to run games like Spore, Guild Wars and maybe CoD4 on medium-high, and it should hopefully be able to run most games for the next 2-3 years. I will also be using this for classwork, so I dont want a power sucker. Last of all, my budget is about $1300-1600 (cheaper it is, the more likely I am to actually get it). Maybe $1700 if its a great deal or has good parts. When I use it for gaming, I plan to hook it up to an external monitor, probably 24 inch or so, and use a regular mouse and keyboard. Any and all readable help is gratefully accepted. Feel free to ask/pm me any questions you might have.THANKS!! Need New Laptop! Help!

ASUS 15.4- Great for portability, seeing as this is for schoolwork too. It will max Call of Duty 4 and run Crysis on High. Possibly the most powerful 15.4 notebook besides the Alienwares, which retail for $2000+ when you add better specs.
Thanks a bunch!any1 else have some suggestions?
I wish my parents had given me a $1600 budget for xmas gifts... In any case, I don't know much about laptops other than the Dell one I had a few years ago was a total peice of garbabe. As was everyone elses who owned one in my dorm. We all had overheating issues along with various other problems. So the only peice of advice I have is stay away from Dell laptops.
A few things to keep in mind if you go with a laptop:Firstly, you won't be able to upgrade a laptop. This means that in 3-4 years, your laptop may struggle to play a lot of games and within 5 years don't expect to be able to play anything beyond minimum settings. Secondly, you are paying a lot more money for a laptop than you would for a comparably powerful desktop. A decent desktop PC will cost $600-$700 as opposed to $1200+ for a laptop.Thirdly, a gaming laptop tends to be quite heavy and has mediocre battery life. To me, this defeats the whole purpose of buying a laptop in the first place. If I were you, I would get an inexpensive laptop, maybe even a $400 netbook, for portability and then save up for a $700 desktop for gaming. It'll end up costing around the same but you get the best of both worlds--a powerful desktop PC for gaming and multimedia applications, and a lightweight laptop with decent battery life.
I was considering that yesterday, but I dont think i can get two computers for christmas lol.
Ok, I am thinking about this one (big thanks to FunkWeasel) and i was wondering what is the largest monitor i could use and still have it look nice? Someone said only a 19'' but i would like to get up to a 24'' if possible. Thanks again! http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9050279%26type=product%26id=1218012519873
